Photograph by: (HO/AFP/Getty Images) OTTAWA â The last spacewalk of the shuttle era was also one of the most Canadian, featuring two Canadian robots and a partly-Canadian technology experiment that one of those robots will soon perform. Dextre, the twin-armed machine that NASA calls the Canadian robotic handyman, is about to learn new tricks. Until now it has been used to fix things on the outside of the International Space Station â installing new batteries, replacing worn parts, and so on. It saves astronauts from doing too many dangerous spacewalks. But now the remotely controlled Dextre will learn to refuel satellites in flight, saving them from drifting off as space junk or burning up in Earth's atmosphere. <a>guild wars 2 gold</a> Before a satellite leaves the ground, technicians fill its fuel tank through a valve that is then triple-sealed and covered with a protective blanket, designed never to be accessed again. NASA is now handing Dextre some tools suited to its delicate touch. The agency sums up the project, which could run for two or three years, this way: Dextre uses (special) tools to cut and manipulate protective blankets and wires, unscrew caps and access valves, transfer fluid, and leave a new cap in place for future refuelling activities. (It) marks the first use of Dextre beyond the planned maintenance of the space station and uses Dextre for technology research and development. We're pushing Dextre a little harder, said Mathieu Caron, supervisor of the Canadian Space Agency's mission control team. The point of this demonstration is to see how far we can go. The key is we're the only ones with a robot capable of doing that on orbit . . . even though it was not designed for it. The transformation of Dextre began soon after 2000, when NASA considered using Dextre to repair the Hubble Space Telescope. In the end it sent human astronauts. We spent, gosh, nearly two years using that robot, designing tools that would service the Hubble, said NASA's Jill McGuire, the Robotic Refuelling Mission project manager. We put all the innovation and all the smarts into the tools to interface with that robot. This (new project) really wasn't a big step for us. We just jumped right in and developed another set of tools. I don't think anybody envisioned that the SPDM (Dextre) would do this type of work when it was first designed, McGuire added. Everybody's excited to see it used in a different manner, doing detailed work. For its current work, Dextre gets four new tools: one cuts wires and removes protective blankets, one removes outer safety caps on fuel tanks, a multi-function tool takes off the fuel cap and fits with the gas panel, and there's a nozzle. <a>guild wars 2 gold</a> <a>gw2 gold</a> The tools have built-in lights and cameras to help human operators see. A future Dextre experiment will use new cables to bypass a failed or outdated avionics unit on a satellite.
